Library Access From Home

One of the benefits from the library software upgrade is your ability to now access Beasley's library catalog from home. This means our teachers, students and parents can search the titles, authors, subjects and series held in our library. Teachers can use this feature to help plan lessons. Students can look for materials to help with homework or plan their choices for their next check out during a library visit.

Parents can work with students to find good choices for Reading Counts quizzes. Simply click on the link click on Beasley, then the catalog tab. You can search for books in your child's reading level with limited success from this site. However, we are working on adding a complete list of Reading Counts quizzes in lexile and in title order to our school website that will provide a more accurate method of finding titles for which we have quizzes. If you have questions, please call Alicia Montgomery, librarian at 467-5440 or email at

Reading Counts

The Mehlville School District provides access to the Scholastic Reading Counts program. This computerized reading assessment program builds independent reading skills and the student’s enjoyment of reading. Each school purchases their chosen quizzes and then students can choose a book to read. After one of these books is read, the student can take a quiz in the lab, the classroom, or in the library. The quiz is immediately scored and the student is provided with feedback.

You will find a list below that provides all of our quizzes in alphabetical order by title. If your child has a book at home or from the public library, you can check if we have a quiz for it at school.

There is also a listing of quizzes in Lexile order. This number is a number which corresponds to the student’s reading level and is determined by the results of the Scholastic Reading Inventory which most of the students take. Once you know your child’s Lexile level, you can look at other titles in that level and guide your child to read those books.

Biographical Resources in the Library

Many readers enjoy stories about the lives of real people. These biographies provide deeper information about heroes we see as role models for our lives, and for those who we cast in the role of villains. Kids also enjoy reading biographies. The school curriculum and state grade level expectations place a growing emphasis on biographical information. High quality individual books are sometimes hard to find, so we look for other sources of biographical information.

The reference section in Beasley's library has several fascinating and useful resources. The most difficult to find information relates to famous Missourians. Our Dictionary of Missouri biography and Show Me Missouri Women have both been indispensable. The Scholastic Book of Outstanding Americans and Portraits of African-American Heroes were specifically written for upper elementary and middle school students. The beautifully illustrated 10 volume set titled Native Americans includes information reaching back thousands of years to the present day.

Our newest resource in this section is the 12 volume set The American Scene: Lives which provides biographies of people in politics, science, arts & entertainment, sports, military and current events. Our fourth graders were recently using this set.

Reference section resources are not circulated to students for several reasons. The purpose of this section is to be constantly accessible, so we only loan these out to teachers for a limited time. Otherwise, these are available in the library. Our reference books are also our most expensive materials. This prohibits us circulating them to students.
